- The Arizona Governor proposes to eliminate the state's juvenile corrections department, turning over those functions to the counties. (Hat tip to the National Juvenile Justice Network [NJJN].)
- And Massachusetts' Citizens for Juvenile Justice is supporting passage of a bill that would "mandate that all juvenile justice agencies collect basic, statistical, non-identifying juvenile justice data at all key points in the system and then share it annually with the public. (Another hat tip to NJJN).
Adolescent Mental Health News
- According to The New York Times, "The State of New York does not have a single full-time staff psychiatrist charged with overseeing the treatment of the 800 or so young people who are detained in state facilities at any given time." What about your state?
- Ten youth under age 21 have filed a class action lawsuit against the state of Washington for failing to provide adequate community-based mental health care.
- The draft changes to the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V) have been posted. There are some interesting changes that affect diagnoses of alcohol and drug use and dependence, as well as oppositional defiant disorder. The manual will also contain new scales for assessing adolescent risk of suicide. (Hat tip to @drugnews.)
