Background: On May 18 and 19, 2011, Reclaiming Futures hosted its biannual Leadership Institute for its participating sites. Held in Miami, the Institute featured presentations from leaders in the fields of youth work and juvenile justice.
About This Video: On May 18, 2011, Karen Pittman, a national leader in youth development work, gave a one-hour presentation on positive youth development—what it is, what it means, and how it can help communities make better decisions about their young people, including those in the juvenile justice system. It was broadcast live and then posted as an archived video.

About the Presenter
Karen Pittman is Co-Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forum for Youth Investment; her work as a leader in the youth development field was recognized in 2009 by The NonProfit Times, which named her as one of the top 50 CEOs in nonprofits with power and influence. A widely published author, Karen has written three books, dozens of articles on youth issues; she is also a regular columnist for Youth Today and a public speaker.
Before co-founding the Forum, Karen conducted studies for the Urban Institute, helped create the adolescent policy agenda at the Children's Defense Fund, directed the President's Crime Prevention Council under President Clinton, worked with General Colin Powell to create America's Promise.
She earned a Masters degree in Sociology from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Oberlin College.
