Parents of teens with alcohol or drug problems often feel terribly isolated. In the last week or two, however, I've found three resources that might help, from parents who've been there. (Two, incidentally, are from Intervene, an excellent blog for parents run by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America.)
- "7 Truths about My Addict that Took 5 Years to Learn." A father writes about the seven hard lessons he and his wife learned in five years of dealing with their addicted son, who is now 21.
- 5 questions to ask when finding treatment for your teen. Advice from a parent, in a column called, "Finding Treatment for Addicted Teens."
- "10 Things Your Teen Would Like You to Hear You Say to Them." It's better to say these on a regular basis long before your teen starts using, but it's never too late to start. (Hat tip to Portland Prevention on Facebook.)
Got any other good resources, or an experience of your own to share? Leave a comment. Or, follow this link for information on evidence-based practices for treating teens with substance abuse issues.
