Improving the Substance Abuse Treatment System for Young People

What does it take to build a system of care for teens and young adults that's recovery-oriented? 
A few days ago, I posted about what the adults think it should like.  Now Uncle Sam wants to hear from young people. 
In fact, Uncle Sam -- in the form of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) - is inviting up to 50 young aduilts aged 18-25 to attend a Young People's Networking Dialogue on Recovery on December 13, 2010 in Baltimore.
All they need to do is follow the link and complete the application form. If their application is successful, their transportation and lodging will be covered. But hurry! Deadline to apply is October 13, 2010. 

 
What Will the Meeting Accomplish?

Here's three of the meeting objectives:

• To provide a forum for young people to describe the challenges and successes of their own personal recovery that could inform elements of a new recovery-oriented system of care.
• To elicit from young people concepts and services that they identify as being critical to recovery, including home/school/community recovery capital, relapse prevention and interventions, meaningful family involvement where appropriate, and overcoming stigma and discrimination.
• To provide a forum for family members to describe the gaps they identify in current treatment and recovery programs, policies, and research activities that could be addressed in a new recovery-oriented system that increases family involvement at the practice, program and policy level of recovery programs.

Let's make sure that young adults with experience in the juvenile justice system make their voices heard - please pass the information/application packet on to others.
