When I think about the many people and organizations who support juvenile justice reform, I confess I don't usually think of doctors as being among them. Not because doctors would have any reason to oppose it; it's just that I haven't run across them in advocacy circles.
So I was surprised and pleased to see that Physicians for Human Rights has launched a "Health and Justice for Youth" campaign. The planks in its platform:
- Alternatives to incarceration.
- Greater limits on transfering adolescents to the adult justice system.
- Improved health services -- particularly mental health treatment -- for teens in the justice system.
