Please Note: Reclaiming Futures is not affiliated with the A&E television show, “Beyond ‘Scared Straight,'” and it does not support the “Scared Straight” intervention in any way. In spite of the program’s claims, research has shown that teens who go through the program are more likely to commit crimes (click the link for more info).
The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Coalition for Juvenile Justice, and the Campaign for Youth Justice, among others, have all stated their opposition to the “Beyond ‘Scared Straight'” television program, and the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) will not fund “Scared Straight” programs because they do not work.
What works with troubled teens involves a combination of sanctions and services that seek to build on youth strengths and interests, address trauma and treatment needs, and work with the whole family. Community-based services can often be accessed through your local schools, department of human services, or (if necessary) your juvenile justice department. Actual services available locally will vary.
